At first it was designed to be a five-door hatchback only but than three-door hatchback and a station wagon were introduced. The power plant range includes 1.4 - 2.0-liter gasoline powered engines of 75 - 163 horsepower and a 1.9-liter diesel engine that produces 68 or 90 hp.

In 2000 the model was restyled. Xsara was provided with updated transparent optics, bumper with built-in fog headlamps, and a new false gitter with a larger concern emblem. The changes noticeably touched up Xsara appearance. Even the most inveterate critics cannot but appreciate Xsara restyled design and admit it to be original and aesthetic. The models produced after 2000 are better equipped. The quality of the interior trim materials was increased. The new engines were introduced: 109-horsepower 1.6-liter gasoline powered one and a new 110-horsepower turbo-charged HDi.
